How much does it cost to withdraw cash at an ATM in Spain?

Surprises are fun, but ATM surprise fees...not so much. Here are some common costs to keep an eye out for when you're withdrawing cash in Spain, so you're never caught off guard again.
  • Dynamic currency conversion fees (DCC)

When you withdraw cash in Spain, the ATM may ask you whether you want to pay in British Pounds rather than in Euros. This is called dynamic currency conversion (DCC). While it may seem useful, it means the ATM provider may charge extra fees and apply their own exchange rates, often with markups. You'll usually get the best deal if you choose to pay in Euros and let your card operator (like Revolut!) handle the exchange.

  • Your home bank's fees

Your home bank will usually charge fees for international ATM use. The solution? Look for providers with international accounts. Your Revolut account is made to be global, so we won't charge any additional fees when you use your debit card abroad. You can also make ATM withdrawals with no fees from us when you're within your plan's monthly limits. After that, you'll pay a 2% fee until your allowance resets.

  • Currency exchange rates

Your home bank may add a markup to the exchange rate that they use to convert your British Pounds . This means you may end up paying more than you expect. With Revolut, you'll get competitive exchange rates, and you won't pay any additional exchange fees on weekdays, whenever you're within your plan's limits. Plus, there's no need to exchange before you head off to Spain. Just use your Revolut card, and we'll automatically handle the exchange for you.

  • Local banks' fees in Spain

Some banks and ATM providers in Spain charge their own fees (also called surcharges) when you use their ATMs. Always check if an ATM charges fees before you complete your withdrawal. If you’re not happy with the costs, just cancel the withdrawal and find another ATM. You can use our ATM locator in the Revolut app to find surcharge-free ATMs in Spain. Don't you love it when things are this easy?

Top 3 tips for using ATMs in Spain

  • Choose the right card for you

Banks and providers set their own fees for international ATM use. Do your research to find the best offers on cash withdrawals abroad. With Revolut, you'll get fee-free ATM withdrawals within your plan's limits, whether you're at home or in Spain.

  • Find surcharge-free ATMs

Heads up — some ATM owners may charge their own access fees. Use our ATM locator in-app to filter out ATMs with surcharges and save a bit more on your next withdrawal.

  • Choose to pay in Euros

If an ATM asks you what currency you want to be charged in, choose to pay in the same currency you're withdrawing. This will help you get better exchange rates and avoid DCC fees.

  • Bonus tip — learn the word for ATM

Here's a fun fact that'll come in handy in Spain — the word for ATM in the local language is cajero automático. You'll also be able to spot them by the ATM symbol in most tourist locations.

  • If your Revolut card is swallowed by an ATM, don't panic. Just follow these steps:

    1. Contact the ATM provider to see if they can return the card. However, if the card was compromised, you won't be able to reactivate it.
    2. Cancel your card and order a replacement in-app by tapping on the card icon on your home screen, going to Settings, and choosing Replace card.
    3. While you're waiting for your new card to arrive, create a virtual card by tapping on the card icon on your home screen, going to + Add new, and selecting Virtual card. You can start using this card instantly for contactless and online payments.
    4. If you attempted a withdrawal before the card was swallowed, check for any pending transactions in-app. If a transaction was completed, select the payment and tap Get help to submit a chargeback request.
  • Sometimes, an ATM or card terminal may ask you if you want to be charged in a currency different from the one you're withdrawing money in. For example, an ATM in Spain may offer to give you cash in EUR but charge you in GBP. This is what's known as dynamic currency conversion (DCC). If you accept, you may get a poor exchange rate and pay additional fees. To make sure you're getting the best rate, choose to be charged in Euros while you're in Spain. Otherwise, the ATM provider can apply their own exchange rate and charge an extra fee. Learn more about dynamic currency conversion (DCC) in our Help Centre.
